DAY 13

DAY 13

TREE 14

I climbed a big, rough tree right behind the Loftus House today. I wanted to get higher but I didn’t feel comfortable using the vine so high up. I hung out for a few minutes then climbed down. I was a little scared but not too bad.

What I’m really scared about is possible liability.  Talking to Guy today about my ring project and how much resistance I may get from me doing any project in the Sanctuary.  He said if one branch breaks because of a project it could be curtains.  Maybe he’s too cautious, but maybe not.  It makes me nervous about this daily climb.  What if someone notices my ribbons and asks around?  I haven’t kept it a secret.  It scares me.

4-17-08: Okay, first I just have to say how weird the word “curtains” sounds in this entry.  I don’t think I have ever said that word with that meaning in my life.  Maybe it’s because I felt like a criminal sneaking around climbing trees… illegally!  So I felt I had to use the lingo.  If that is even criminal lingo.  Probably not these days.

The ring project is an idea I never made.  The idea was to make a bunch of strong plastic rings, tie ropes to the rings and the other ends of the ropes to branches of a tree.  It would be like a huge piece of playground equipment.  I had made sketches of a whole jungle gym made from attaching things to trees.  But the concept did not seem to go anywhere besides making fun stuff to play on.  It wasn’t saying anything about tree climbing, so I scrapped it.  Curtains for that idea.

Guy, is a sculptor who rents the large barn at the Mount.  He makes figural sculptures and knows a lot about casting with all sorts of new materials.  He was going to help me cast the rings into plastic.  Instead he just made me really paranoid, and after I got to know more of the Friars I knew they didn’t care as much as Guy thought.  I broke a few branches here and there and nothing happened to me. (Sorry)

Liability issues come up a few more times in my year of climbing but I got through the entire year with out falling, dying, suing, or getting sued!!! YES!

Last night I climbed this huge tree in front of a church in St. Matthews off Brownsboro Road.  I didn’t have a flash light with me like Will told me I should so I could make night videos.  So I just took pictures.  Here are a few:

  1. this is awesome todd. i get to see the sights (sort of) of home but from a better vantage point. taking in the sights from a higher perspective, literally, than me…what an idea. i think this is the perfect way to describe/express yourself to other people. i look forward to climbing trees through you throughout the year. texas does not have much in the way of trees…we have an abundance of small prickly things and tumbleweed.

do you have a good guess as to how high up you have climbed before? some of the pictures look fairly high but it is difficult to tell.

  2. Is this… Alex? I am trying to figure out who I know in Texas who considers Louisville home. And thank you, I look forward to your comments.

As for height I only measured once and I was 58 ft. up. But I am sure I’ve been higher. But not higher than 70 ft. When the blog gets to much later into the year you’ll see some pictures that give you a much better idea for what looking down from the top of a tree looks like. Stay tuned!!
